About Shelter Island NY

Shelter Island is a town and an island on the eastern end of Long Island in Suffolk County, NY although it is separated from the rest of the county by water. It has a population of approximately 2,411 people. Shelter Island was originally named Manhansack-aha-quash-awamock, which literally translates to “Island sheltered by islands” from the Manhanset Indian language.
